ICAR-CIFRI has also built a repository of biological and ecological data on the Ganga River System. By focusing on the project targets, ICAR-CIFRI has recorded a total of 215 fish species from entire stretch of river Ganga from the entire eight year study. As an outcome for the uplifment of fish stocks, a river ranching of more 143 lakhs was conducted comprising of Indian Major Carps (IMC), Mahseer and other indigenous fish stocks in 100 different events all across five states of the country. Till date more than 1.20 lakhs of Hilsa fishes has been ranched in the upstream of river Ganga with detailed tagging procedures. Since 2017 onwards, ICAR-CIFRI has been continuously engaged and is responsible towards environment protection and fish faunal rejuvenation in the Ganga Basin, which includes the Ganga and its tributaries.
